How To: Add Content On WordPress Category Pages
For whatever reason by default WordPress does not display the content description for categories. You would figure that there might be a toggle button such as “Click this to include category description on live site”, but there isn’t. As an SEO, this drives me nuts because category level pages without content have very little chance of ranking.
So What Is One To Do?
You could search the internet for various WordPress plugins that would do this, but installing unfamiliar plugins can break WordPress templates. There is a much simpler way that should work for 90% of all WordPress sites which involves one line of code.
Access your themes category template file which will be named something close to: category.php. You can access this via FTP or from your WordPress dashboard menu under Appearance > Editor > Find the File.
Then add the following line of code to the appropriate section of the template. A good place to insert the description is under the category heading, which is normally a H1 or H2 tag.
CODE: <?php echo category_description(); ?>
Like I said, this solution should work for most WordPress sites, but not every installation is the same. Please make sure to backup your files if you will be working on this.
